79 GL1000 Electrical Problems

Postby ssmgr » Sun Jan 10, 2010 11:10 pm

I recently Purchased a 79 GL1000. It was starting and running fine. I went to start one day and nothing. I noticed that the wire assembly connection above the main fuse had burned thru and shorted out. The fuse was okay.

I removed the bad connection and replaced the wiring and add a new 30amp fuse link. When I go to start the bike.... Nothing. When the ignition switch is on, the horn blows, the gauges work and the turn signals work. The headlight is not on and when I press the start button..... Nothing....

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks

The wiring assembly you're talking about that was burned - was it these three yellow wires?

New Electrical problem...

Bike started fine after replacing the wires for a couple of days.

Replaced the starter solenoid and the bike started for a couple of days. Now nothing when I press the start button. I can start the bike if I use a screwdriver between the solenoid posts.

I am confused??

What about if you put +12 volts to the coil side of the solenoid? That will determine whether the problem is the solenoid, or the starter switch itself.
