77 gl1000 or gl1100
I'm new here and to goldwings. but just purchased my first gl1000 and the engine says gl1100 so am i right by assuming this engine is not the factory one for this year? just trying to make sure i order the right parts i need. any comments would be greatly apperciated

If the engine says 1100 (and it is in fact an 1100, not a 1000 with 1100 valve covers on it) then someone has shoehorned it into your bike. If you post a picture of the engine, we can tell you for sure what it is.

ok im going to have to take computer classes first i guess! cant get pics to upload! from what ive read the gl1000 this year was equipped with kick start and this one does not. this there any other obvious things i could look for?the previous owner could tell me nothing about it and it was to cheap to be picky over lack of details lol thanks ill keep trying to get a pic up

I think you may have a 1000 with 1100 covers. The carbs are from a 1000. But?? Take a picture of the left side of the engine from just a bit further away.

1977 GL1000, the frame serial number began with GL1-3000001 while the engine serial number began with GL1E-3000006. I believe that 1980 was the first year for GL1100 and the engine serial number began with SC02E-2000047.

ok checked the engine code and it starts with gl1e- so some one just put 1100 covers on it. thanks everyone for your help.

1977 GL1000 engines are good. They make more hp than the 1100 but have less low end torque. So not a bad compromise.
