Battery side covers

Postby JellyBelly » Mon Apr 23, 2012 1:44 pm

So I have three GL1000's. A 76, 77, and a 78. I got them cheap and will be projects for me and my two sons in the future (they are 2 and 8 weeks old right now). I have started doing them up...getting them running right before changing/improving the aesthetics. All were "barn finds" and in pretty rough condition.

The 78 have the side covers (that cover the battery) but are cracked and/or missing tabs.
I don't have the side covers (that cover the battery) for the 77.

Other than finding old parts that are as equally bad quality what are my options?...Does anybody know of anywhere that makes these aftermarket in metal?

I've never seen anything but OEM,
They can be purchase on ebay and them made to look like new. Just start out with good ones.
Here is a picture of mine all redone.

Finding good OEM on e-bay seem pretty hard so far. Most are cracked or missing tabs.

I just spent the time to look at everything for sale on ebay, I must say you are right. I was amazed at what people think they can sell. there was not a single one there I would consider , at any price. every one of them I would put out with the trash. Good luck and keep looking.

Yeah its a shame mother didn't make the tabs stronger on the side covers . I nearly lost one the other week i felt it move took it off at the next stop and two of the tab where broken off but still stuck in the grommets . I don't know whats up with Evil bay everyone seems to think they have the last Goldwing part and want your first born . Then if you find what you need cheap the shipping is crazy Evil bay are charging double what the USPO charges as i just mailed to boxes the Europe Evil bay wanted 17 bucks but the PO was 7.48 why such a big difference in price . I just keep looking and every now and then you get what you want at the right price .

Yes "evilbay", I think I'm going to have to fabricate my own either metal or fiberglass to make me happy...once I build 1 mold I think I'll have to set up shop online and go into business :-)

Is there a HOW TO article on refinishing side covers and tank covers?
I'm not much of an artist so a easyer to work with paint that will look decent would be nice?

I wouldnt tackle that job without a clean room and paint sprayer if u want a great finish. Dust and grime will leave the finish looking bad

I'm sure your right about that Ive never had success with painting anything but a wall.
Ive bought a lot of stuff from EBAY and everything always looks better in the photos then in real life when you get it.
I'm much better looking in pictures
