1976 GL1000 ceased. Anything to do?

Postby nathan18 » Tue Apr 24, 2012 6:34 pm

Hi guys. Im completely new to the Honda Goldwing / Motorcycle world in general. I recently picked up a 1976 GL1000 with 40,000 miles on it out of a really old gentlemans driveway for 50 bucks. He had it covered and assured me that it ran. He simply did not want it and obviously practically gave it away to me. He had lost the key last year during his move. When i got it home it would not turn over. I removed the spark plugs and noticed a white residue in the cylinders. Is there anything i can do at this point to try and uncease the engine? How much would it cost if i took it to a shop and had it done? I want to restore this bike but am just a novice. What has worked for you all?

Pour some marvel mystery oil in the spark plug holes and let it sit a few days to see if the rings will loosen up and allow you to turn the engine over manually either with the kick-starter or by removing the cap on the back of the alternator (17mm) and turning the crank clockwise with a 12mm wrench.

Yes, like D2D said. Turn it over every once in a while, but not with the starter. Use the kick-starter gently or a wrench. You want the oil to do the work, not the wrench. Sounds like a great find. A key is not a big deal, my GL key fits several GL's.

Also leave your plugs out when you turn it over.
Once started, good tip below.

Does it sound like it is attempting to start...
Is the gas on, is it in neutral, is the kill switch on run....sounds silly but you never know!
Try to work it out yourself rather than taking it to a shop...you'll enjoy the process an appreciate the bike more. It'll save you some money you can spend on other things too :)

Randakk (randakk.com) is always a good source for info.
When it comes time to rebuild the carbs get his rebuild kit rather than taking it somewhere. His dvd kit makes the process for ever novice and expert.

If you need parts I have a '76 I'm parting out. Feel free to e-mail me at mark4.1to20@gmail.com

Enjoy the bike...I love my 77 and 78. You got a great deal.

Put up a pic when you can...I'd love to see it.

I honestly don't even see a kick start lever on this bike? Is it possible to have it removed? I guess Ill have to try and turn it over by removing the back of the alternator and using the wrench....

Kick starter socket is on the left hand side of the bike. See image - it's number 6.

BTW...check this site out for all manuals free - http://www.motorcyclesolutionsllc.com/guidgl1000.html

The kick starter bar is removable (not a permanent fixture like on some bikes) so first u need to get one if you don't have one with the bike.
The socket has a rubber stopper in the end so be looking for this...unless it is missing.

I can take a pic of my bike when I get home and upload it for you if you need an actual pic for reference.

Otherwise, put it on the center stand, stick it in top gear and try turning the rear wheel by hand, that will also turn over the engine, but you will not be able to put enough force to damage anything.. Kickstart is the best option, but this is a close second.. As stated, keep the spark plugs out so you are not fighting against the engines compression.

I'll see if I have one to sell when I get home. $35+ one ebay. I'll beat any comparable price.

do not over do it and bend a rod, I have also used a dowl rod and stuck thru the plug hole and gave it mild taps hoping to loosen it alittle.

You might already have a kickstart lever. It is normally stored behind the right side fake tank cover. But you have to raise the top tank cover first to get to it, and that requires a key...

Or have a seat that isn't attached...then u can access the lock...speaking from experience...when i got my 77 the ignition key didn't work in the top shelter but soon discovered the seat wasn't attached and so I could unlock the top shelter that way.

Sorry about the quality of this pic...I am pointing to the kick start plug but it was too dark and the flash wouldn't work on my phone because the battery was low...but you get the idea of where it is (this is on a '77). The 76 is in my shed where there is no lights and with my flash not working I took a pic of the '77.

Ok So I definitely don't have the kick start lever but i was able to put it on its center stand. However my friend who works on bikes occasionally told me that I did not spray enough of the PB Blaster in the cylinders. So we put it on its center stand and literally filled them up with the blaster. He said give it a couple days and then try and turn the rear wheel. I really appreciate all your guys help and look forward to getting this thing on the road!

Certainly look forward to that working, I think it will. Then you need to do a oil flush procedure to get everything cleaned up again.

I suggest you let it soak for days, then give the rear wheel a rocking motion. That way not too much force will be required. Don't push hard until you are convinced that rocking will not move the piston. Time is your friend with PB in there.

I also have a '76 GL1000 and it was ceased too. I pulled the plugs and put PB blaster in. it took about a week of me trying every day and it broke loose. Then I drained the oil and changed the filter. I then put 2 QT of transmission fluid and 2QT oil in and I keep turning it over with the kick starter every day to scrub the walls. I have not got it running yet, still working at it. I need a gas tank and I have no spark yet. Anyway, Check out randakk.com and look for resurrecting an old bike. Good luck, Scott

There is a product called Aerokroil made by Kano Labs that I use when PB doesnt work. It claims to penetrate an opening of one-millionth of an inch and I am a firm believer. I used this on rusted exhaust clamps that had not been off for 36 years and this stuff made it easy.
