I need opinions on what to do

Postby fortychevyrod » Tue May 08, 2012 6:20 pm

I am considering trading a 40 chevy 2 door sedan body and chassis to a fella for what I was told is a 1978 Goldwing. The guy has removed the seat and replaced it with a corbin seat and also has removed the faring and the hard bags. If I do trade, should I ask for the factory parts that he removed from the bike or just not worry about them?

On the flip side, he has a trailer load of goldwings and parts that he offered to me in trade. One of the GWs a 1976 I believe, has front fork damage but he has a replacement for it. In addition, he has enough parts including the engines/transmissions to build at least 2 complete bikes from all these parts. Not being a very good mechanic, I am shying away from the parts deal and leaning towards the 1978 that he has been repairing. He started it up and it started right away and did sound very good.

What should I ask if anything and what should I look for on the complete running bike? Would the trailer load of parts be a better deal to take for someone with mediocre mechanical ability? I dont want to end up with a bunch of motorcycles/parts scattered throughout my shop just sitting there.

Any comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I do trust this guy so trust in his word is not an issue.

Thanks for all comments in advance!

JB

1978's did not have factory bags or fairings, so either those are aftermarket parts, or it is not a 1978.

Thank you admin...I may have gotten the year wrong I will check tomorrow but he showed me the parts that he removed and of course they looked factory. Thanks for that info though.

I agree with wingadmin. Look at the tag on the steering neck to see if it shows the year. Far as the 'parts' bikes, you won't know what you're getting. May take lots of work to get them running, then you have to look at registering them. You'd have to be sure of getting titles to make things easier. As far as wrenching on these bikes, it's easier then you think. Plenty of knowledge on this site to help out. I think your best bike is the one running, providing no hidden issues. I would talk him into tossing in the fairing and bags in case you decide you want to install them later.

Thanks Paul I appreciate your comments and response. He has titles for 2 of the other wings...the one with fork damage runs great he said, then another title on one of the other frames. He has 2 an additional untitled frame and 2 engines and all the other parts to complete two of the 3 plus wings. I thought I would ask for the parts he removed just for the reason you suggested. Thanks again!

I would also look at all the parts that he is offering the motors if any good are worth some bucks. I would try to put a good running bike together and sale the left overs on e-bay. good luck Hal

Thanks Hal, good idea...I'll consider that. I'm considering tossing some more into the deal to try and get the running bike and the trailer load of parts. We did go thru the parts on the trailer and they all looked good and clean. I wish I knew more about this stuff but I dont so I have to play it by ear I guess. I do appreciate all the comments and also the great information available here on this site.

Yeah! Good idea to go for both the running bike and the parts.
