1978 GL1000 need keys

Postby carsfastfredi » Fri May 18, 2012 3:01 pm

Hello....just brought home a barn find. Was able to use my ignition key from my 81 GL1100 (after about 5 minutes) by wiggle putting key partly in and out. Now I have no key for gas tank cover or saddle bags and the right side fairing storage box......any idea's what to do? THANKS

If you can take off the seat you can open the top shelter latch with a long skinny screwdriver (or similar long object). No wait...that is on the '77.

on the '78 you need to take off the windjammer (if there is one) and use a screwdriver to access the latch that way.

When you can open it get the numbers off the cylinder. Take the numbers (or cylinder) to Honda and they will cut you a key for $5. This key may or may not match the saddle bags.

If it does not...use a drill and drill out the pop-rivets on the saddle bags (where the hinges are). This will give you access to the saddle bags. Just replace the locks on the saddlebags. Not worth the effort of re-keying.

Sometimes there are numbers on the outside of the saddle bag locks. A locksmith will charge you an arm and a leg to cut one. I suggest just replacing them.

Hey JELLYBELLY....I was sort of thinking the same thing. When to went to start taking off the lower fairing they are smooth rivet heads attached fron the back with wing nuts. The right side box has a lock so I can't get in from inside of glove box.
You are right about trying to have keys cut. I live out in central (bumf***k) texas. nearest locksmith is about 75 miles. I have no problem buying new locks with keys...just dont know how to open these bags.gas, etc. without tearing or scratching the plastic stuff....was hoping someone out there knows some back door tricks? THANKS

Two options on the fairing lock.
1. Take off the right light. It will give u access through a 3 inch air hole that was designed for a horn to be inserted. There may be black tape covering the hole. This is to stop noise. Use a long screw driver and hold your tongue just right.
Option 2. Use a scredriver to break the internal pins and then replace.

Sorry, I did mean turn signal. So I made this video for you...was easier than putting up a lot of pics...hope it helps.

Should be pretty easy to access as demonstrated. I attached one pic showing how close that lock is to the turn signal hole.
