ignition switch replacement

Postby carsfastfredi » Mon May 21, 2012 2:05 pm

Still working on the key thing for this 1978 GL1000. Its only got 42,000 miles on it. So im trying to fix it up right and original. no one seems to be able to tell me how to install new one. Im guessing i will have to remove the three gauge cluster just to have access to the switch. any help would be appreciated THANKS

I'm going from memory but as I recall,There are 2@ 10 mm nuts accessed from under the upper mount.Use a long extension to get to them.
Unplug the harness and remove the whole assembly down and out.
The actual electrical part can only be removed from the switch casting by turning the key ON and then releasing the 3 tabs .

Often the switch part is repairable.

As i recall, there are 2 bolts that attached it to the top mount. It's cramped in there and difficult to see unless you get up right under the front end.
