used heads+ gaskets 77 gw

Postby gnarlyroad » Sat Feb 20, 2010 5:23 pm

Looking like I'm going to have to replace my rt. side head. Previous PO put in a heliocoil for one of the valve cover bolts. Which promptly broke free. Then part of the screw hole walls broke off a chip. :( :x .
Means I have to take apart what I've just done :( and remove the head on that side.
When I take the valve set off( valves, springs etc) do I need to take them apart totally( I know, I know, bearings etc.$$$$), or can I leave them as a unit and still remove the head.
Well at this point any help would be usefull. :)
Thanks.

Have located a head off a 78 gw. Are these compatable( mines a 77). What other years might fit if the 78 doesn't.

'75 through '79 should bolt right up. '78and '79 had slightly milder cams that gave more mid-range punch over earlier wings

Have you thought of filling the hole - either with weld, or JB Weld or something of the sort - and re-tapping the hole? Might be a worthwhile last-ditch effort before giving up and replacing the entire head.

heads

Postby gnarlyroad » Tue Feb 23, 2010 6:32 pm

If you've been following my trials and tribulations you know that I had some problems with the valve cover bolt holes(heliocoil broke out ). I tried JB Weld as suggested and well it didn't work. So now onto replacing the head on that side. Have found an 78 head in good shape and have someone to do the work. Someone said there was a slight difference in the head/valve set up from the 77. My? is ,is it enough of a difference that both heads would have to be replaced or can I just do the one that is broken?

If it's just the cams that are different, and the heads are the same spec, then you can just replace the head itself, and use the old cams.

:D Well I'm all smiles(happy camper). Although I didn't expect to send any work out quite so soon, it has actually worked out pretty good. Not only found the rt side head and am getting it replaced; also found the original head ;ight and possibly the front sig lights. Also have gotten an original seat pan and noticed the grab rail while I was there. Actually coming together pretty good.
So far I have been within the budget I set myself and might even be able to afford insurance  :D Thanks again for all the advice and good wishes. Think I'll hang around.

You should replace both heads with the ones from the '78. Chances are you don't have the same mileage on yours that the '78 has on it.
Plus if you had problems on one side, the other will probably develope problems of a simular nature also.
