Can you describe the knock a little better? Is it just there at idle? Does it completely go away at higher rpm? Where is the vacuum line that came loose? There are no vacuum lines that will throw the timing off. Timing is completely mechanical. How much oil are you adding when you do an oil change? The type of oil you use isn't likely to cause a knock. Regular dino oil or synthetic. Don't waste your money until you determine what is causing the knock. Does the knock seem to be coming from the right or left side? I'm wondering if the "knock" might be the timing chain slapping??? We really need more information.

Hi Tom thanks for taking the time to help the knock is coming from the left side not sure if it completely goes away at higher RPms but does get less I'm not even close to a mechanic as you can tell just started going over the engine with clymer manual found out I have no breather collecter?? Gonna order one now guess I'm getting a crash coarse in motorcycle it ran great in the beginning prob started with carbs overflowing rusty tank did the vinegar thing changed gas filter anyway I broke down yest starter not turning maybe was damaged from previous pron with ground connector the wire on the oil sender is exposed where it connects to rubber mount on engine gonna try to get her started and get it to a shop by me and go over the whole bike don't think I can do much more ?? Don't want to do anymore damage it's a great looking bike and like I said it was running pretty good not long ago

John, Get yourself a mechanic's stethoscope and use it to find where your noise is coming from. I had a MC engine that sounded for all the world like it had a bad wrist pin knock and once I put the stethoscope on it I was able to pin point the location of the knock - turned out to be a worn rocker arm - cheap fix rather than a complete engine tear down. One of the best tools you can have and they are cheap to buy! Good luck

I agree - a cheap diagnostic tool, and I have used it SO MANY times to figure out what is going wrong in an engine:

John,

I have an extra mechanic's stethoscope. Message me your mailing address and I will send it to you as a "welcome to the wonderful world of wingers" gift! Project on dude.

Has anyone considered clutch chatter? Carb imbalance? This is my first Wing, but all the other SOHC4s I've owned would knock pretty convincingly if the carbs were out of sync. It does it worse at idle. Cruising makes no noise at all.

A scope may indicate noise around the clutch basket or primary chain.

When I did my starter the tutorial I used made it very clear to have it on the side stand for the installation and that move the gear enough. Glad to hear you got yours in, now if we can just get this pesky snow to melt...
