Is anyone running GL1100/Harley exhaust?

Postby El Taco » Sat Oct 06, 2012 7:09 pm

I know it fits just fine, so long as the bike is lowered. With two inch short shocks, the crossover clears the wheel adequately throughout the range of suspension travel. I'd just like to know if any of y'all are running stock suspension with modified crossovers.

Otherwise, I'd like to retain my old GL1000 headers for conversion to Harley exhaust. I have some old Heritage Softtail mufflers with the fins that are already mounted on my old CB550, as well as finned Screamin' Eagles and turn outs, too. I can never leave well enough alone, and tend to change up my exhaust just for weekend runs. It's nice to be loud enough to set off car alarms from time to time, just not all the time.

So does your 1000 run good with 1100 exhaust? How does it sound in comparison to the original? If you're running wide open HD pipes, how did it affect your tune? Was it worth the time to make the adapters?

I was running Harley sharkfins but I have bates side bags and they were too low running underneath and I kept hitting the asphalt on sharp turns! It was easy to do and didn't have any affect at all on tune! I made extensions to get them past my bags. I attached a pic. I have since changed to Jardine exhaust. My headers were rotted on the ends too so that was also an issue.

These Mufflers have threaded holes on the sides. I had flat bar stock bent at two angles with holes to mount on my saddle bag mounts and the side holes on the mufflers. They were solid. I was looking for some good headers and found the Jardine set up on Craigslist for $150. It was a lot to spend but I don't regret it!

Yeah, I see the difference. I like the turned down look better. As for sharp curves, my '72 CB350 sits about three inches off of the ground, but it's also over eight feet long, I know a bit about catching the asphalt. On the 550, the finned pipes worked marvelously. Where I had been baffling some old Jardine megaphones with sheet metal and steel wool, the difference was night and day.

With the megaphones, I used to cram beer cans in the ends and punch holes in the bottom. My pipes looked like salt shakers at the ends, but they made for a slow, quiet ride to work in the early mornings. I did it out of consideration for the people who lived in route, and it was all residential. The last turn was onto the main road, and they'd blow out at around 7K, or at least one would. If I took it easy and deliberately kept the RPM down, I could get about a week out of a pair before they sounded, well, like beer cans.

I made my first 2-1 collectors out of sheet metal, but later migged some up out of exhaust tubing and concealed them under cleverly cut HD heat shields. Great sound, good flow.

I'm new to this forum. I just purchased a couple Harley Sportster mufflers off Ebay. I plan on putting them on with in the next couple of weeks. My headers are good and I have wraped them ( realy like the look and way cooler ) Can't wait to hear whjat they sound like. Like was said, these also have 2 threaded screw holes on each. To make a bracket should be easy. When you put the pipe extentions on, did you make a bend so the large kick stand can go all the way up?

Mr. Campbell....not to hi-jack the thread, but I really like the blue accents on the valve covers and carb tubes. What did you use?

Back to topic, I believe I'll have to keep my eyes out for a pair of Harley mufflers. Any issues on the 1000s as to fit or anything else?

You'll likely just tuck the pipes in close enough to clear the stand. I've yet to put a set on my wing.
