fast idle on 78 1000

Postby Dltroper » Sat Mar 20, 2010 1:39 pm

Hi, Was just wondering if any of you wing owners have come across a idle [probelm]? my bike is a 78 1000 when it gets warm and the fan kicks on it idle around 200-2300rpm I've replaced the cut off valve and have seafoam in it most of the time. Seems alittle high to me especially when i'm sitting at a lite. Thanks for any info. Dltroper in California

Welcome to the site from WI, What RPM do you get when it's cold or just started for a minute or two.Yes, that Idle is way to high.I'm sure you have tried to adjust ?

Thanks for the reply, Idles at 800-900 when cold and the fan is not on, When warmed up it idles at 1000 to 1100 when the fan is not on, If temp gets to half way up the gauge and the fan turns on it starts to climb rapidly to 2200- 2300. I thought maybe someone has had the same and there is a way to adjust fast idle, I haven''t synced the carbs yet. Thanks for any info. David in Cal.

I would get those carbs adjusted for sure, but make sure you have a clean air filter too. Have you checked any thing else, Valves, ignition timing, compression, points. do the simple things first that you can do. Get or purchase a service manual.
Some times just reading you will find you over looked something simple.Start with cheking the plugs, are they the correct plugs .

Thanks for the reply I have checked most of the little things like replacing cables air, cut off valve and put in a dyna Electronic ignition, sweet, so I don' t have to wonder about timing , I"ll sync the carbs soon, and I'll replace the manifold o-rings , just before I sync, Thanks for the post it's 70 degrees today and I just got back from a nice ride,,,

Hi try spraying carb cleaner or similar around the carb intake manifolds an intake air leak can cause a high idle sucking in to much air. Engine will race up if you find a leak when you spray . sometimes the intake gaskets wiggle loose out of place when you are installing and then leak. Make sure their is o-rings on the idle air screws if they let in air idle will climb. Make sure throttle cables are well lubed and not pinched my Gl will idle up if the wheel is turned and it binds on the cables re route then.
Good luck

I'd like to know what you found out. Mine is doing the same thing as you described when it warms up! Please post for all of us to see what the fix was. Thanks
