Postby Dave_B » Wed Feb 27, 2013 11:52 am

How much oil does a 1977 GL 1000 hold in the engine? and how much and what kind in the transmission/gear case? Also anyone have an oppinion of Mobil 1 racing 4T 10-w40? is this a good oil for my bike?

Probably holds about 4 quarts. The transmission is lubricated with the motor oil. It's all housed together in the same case. Nothing wrong with the Mobil. If you got money go Mobil.

Mobil 1 Racing 4T™ 10W-40 synthetic motor oil is engineered for on-road, off- road and competition four-cycle motorcycles.

Put just a little over three quarts in. If you put the 3.3 they recommend you will have a bit of smoke on startup. The Rotella 15W-40 won't ruin your clutch. A lot of us on here with GL1000 use it. My bike shifts better and everything since I switched

As stated in your previous thread, use Rotella (for motorcycles) and get an owners manual. It will answer basic questions for operation and maintenance. An alternative would be to download a service manual at no cost.

I may have figured out your problem with the amount of oil your GoldWing will hold. I'm not sure anyone here know exactly how much a 1977 GL (Ten Thousand) will hold........LOL :o

Check your information under your name. I got a good laugh out of it.

Just teasing you and welcome to the forum.

It seems like (around here anyway) that at any given time either Valvoline or Castrol will be running a promotion for their motorcycle blend oils- cheap- (I've even been using it in my old Volkswagen because of the bargain price) but since you're already inquiring about "top shelf" Mobil Synth- go for it... just wondering though, how much oil does a GL10,000 hold?

3.5 quarts with a filter change. Just changed mine.

Any MC oil is good. Mobil has a fairly good rep for quality over their entire lube line. I went with Rotella myself. Too many experienced recommendations not to try it. Price point over other oils doesn't hurt either. Cheapest by the 5 quart jug at Wally World.
