ENGINE CARB MATCHING NUMBERS

Hi i need some info. I have a 79 gl1000 engine number starts 411**** with carbs 771a i am having a lot of problems with this
bad starting high rev on tick over. i have cleaned and set float level. set timing.new dyna ignition and coils balanced carbs. checked for air leaks.still the same
what i want to know is i have another engine 405**** with carbs 755b.
as both engines are 400 will the 755b carbs be ok replacing the 771a or will i need to swop engines
i also have a 100*** with 755a carbs low milage engine
any info on this

been having a look at thing and found this 371 advance unit was fitted.from what i can find out is this is for the early gls
going to fit the 431a and see what that like

Well the advance unit might be a contributing situation but I would not think it is the full story. Let other voice in here.

just noticed the carb is NOT a 771a its a 769a
i think your right there fred. i have been through everthing. swapping carbs over if there ok will be the last thing i can think of. or that i am missing some thing simple

made up my mind. after trying to get my 1978 engine to start and run smoothly.i have all ways had trouble with this.
i have decided to fit a 1975 engine i have. it has not been run for app 15 years so today i got it running put on my carbs from the 78 fuel line from can as tank all rusty charged battery. hit the button and she fired into life nice and smooth even tickover responded to the throttle. it even started by the kick start. so its going in the 1978
