Comstar Wheels "To tube or not to tube"

Postby diamonditrk » Thu Apr 15, 2010 1:35 pm

I have a 1978 GL1000 with comstar wheels. I am installing a new front tire and was surprised when I found that it had a tube in it. The tire I purchased is a tubeless tire so I went to my local tire store to get a valve stem and they were reluctant to say whether an automotive valve stem was the same for a motorcycle. I called my local Honda dealer to inquire and they told me that I had to use a tube with the comstar wheel. I noticed in the post about mounting a new tire that the pictures show a comstar wheel. Please clear up my conflicting information about whether or not I must use a tube.

Comstar wheels when they first came out were designed to have tubes in them, later versions were tubeless. You can tell the difference by the size of the stem hole - tubeless rims have the larger hole to accommodate a removable valve stem.

If you are installing a tubeless tire on it, yes, you can use a standard automotive valve stem.

According to Honda, the 78s are still tubed. The 79s and 1100 are supposed to be tubeless, but my late 79 wheels have the small hole for tubes!

'Impossible' is just a level of difficulty! The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask first!
