Wiring Issue...

Postby spookytooth » Wed Jun 05, 2013 8:46 pm

This is driving me crazy. I've got led tail lights and they work great. They were super easy to hook up and figure out. Now I got a set of led front marker/turn signal lights and they're giving me fits! Everything works, but I can only run either the markers or the turn signals. In fact, as soon as I connect the turn signal wire the marker shuts off. This can't be that difficult; there's only three wires: ground, turn and marker. They share a ground. Turn signals work great. But... as soon as i connect the signal wire the marker shuts off.

Any ideas?

Yup, you gotta run a diode to prevent the back feed. Drove me nuts until I figured it out. Documented here:

So I tried a diode (4N001 Radio Shack) by cutting the blinking element lead inside the headlight bucket then inserting the diode pointing the flow direction toward the lamp and wallah, the running light worked just like it did when the blinker wire was disconnected. A 4N001 diode has a small voltage drop (around 0.7 volt) but on the blinker element it did not appear consequential.

So certainly without a diode, the LED solution is no good but add one and you can have a very fine low current bright running light and blinker solution.

Holy crap I love this place! I run a Radioshack, by the way...

Incidentally the cat# for these diodes (sold in pairs) is 276-1101. Using the catalog number makes it a lot easier for the guy at Radioshack to find the part in the bin...

Glad to have such an easy solution. LED's are very circuit specific. I tried the same LED blinker bulb that gave me troubles up front in the tail light housing and it worked normal back there with no diode. But I earlier tried a 1157 style LED SMD tail light bulb back there and it made my hyperlites stop working. I had called Hyperlite and they has said I may need a diode. Now the SMD taillight had other issues too, it made the plate red and not white so I ended up replacing that with another LED and then had no hyperlite issues. So when the blinkers had the issue, I first wasted about a week messing with the sockets but then tried the diode in both wires and found the solution. So glad you could use the learning.
