If Anyone Is Interested...

Postby spookytooth » Thu Jun 06, 2013 8:56 pm

Here's a short little video I made today. I was reading through old posts and someone had recommended putting an ounce of Stabil in each tank of gas... Man. That has shown the best improvement in performance so far. I was blown away..

OK... did a little research. Gilmore is outside K Zoo... One of these days I'd like to ride to K Zoo because there's a biker cafe there that actually gave me the inspiration for my build. It won't be this weekend though... I am an incredibly busy guy. I just barely get a day off a week.

Plus... This bike is nowhere NEAR show ready. I have a crapton of detail work left to do. The OCD in me says it needs to be tore down to the frame and rebuilt. The frame has some scrapes and rust on it.. Right now it is just a daily rider (in Mi, hehe) that I like to wrench on. Maybe next winter I'll get the wild hair to tear it down and do it right..

+1 on STA-BIL. I use STA-BIL Marine in every tank. Same as regular STA-BIL but, it also addresses Ethonal (if it's an issue), removes water and adds lubrication to the slides. More here.

Just read through this thread and found it informative.

I do have a question about the use of Sta-Bil. This product was recommended by my carb rebuilder, Pistol Pete's who is endorsed by Randakk's as an approved rebuilder. They said I should use Sta-Bil Marine in every tankful. I have located a few stations around town that carry 100% gas with no ethanol added. I am a somewhat trusting person and have not investigated the 100% claim, so I have not used the Sta-Bil in every tank. Should I use it anyway as a precaution at every fill up?

I do not use it in every tank, but it is a fine idea. I do use it in most fill ups.

Regarding fuel and oil additives, I think many are oversold and some are just personal preference. But, in some cases, their use is beneficial e.g., STA-BIL Marine which addresses ethanol issues, moisture, prolongs fuel life and adds lubricity. All of these are good things for our vintage bikes.

Living in California has it's ups and downs but, the absence of ethanol stations here is definitely a plus with fewer than 8% offering ethanol based fuel. I fill up my tank at the end of each ride and, when back home, I add a bit of STA-BIL Marine. (One feature of this product that I like is that you can't 'over-add' as you can with MMO). I used to to use a combination of (regular) STA-BIL, MMO and, at the beginning of the riding season, a bit of SeaFoam to clean any residue from the carbs. I've since abandoned all of that and use only STA-BIL Marine year-round with good results.

One thing to note with STA-BIL (in any form) is that it has a shelf life. The maker doesn't really discuss this much in their literature but, if you look closely at the container there's a little place on the label where you can write the date that it was 'opened'. This is a very evasive term, in my opinion. The shelf-life of STA-BIL is stated to be, "two years or when the color of the product starts to change." They suggest that you keep the cap secured tightly when not in use in order to "avoid color change". Really? As a result, I don't invest in the 'large economy size' container but, a smaller bottle that I can use up within a year.

Aznyaz, I urge you to use only stations that are ethanol-free for your GL. Even if STA-BIL is touted as being able to address ethanol issue, I'd rather not have 'ethanol issues' to begin with (especially after paying PP to rebuild my carbs).

In Michigan 10% ethanol is all that is available outside of airports and race fuel vendors. All the regular ststions just sell blended fuel. Stabil and MMO or better yet Stabil Marine works wonders for the ethanol issue.

That's a shame and I can't figure out why that is. California is very up conservative when it comes to environmental issues, gun laws etc. So, the fact that there are so few ethanol stations here is a mystery to me.

Thanks for the input. I will continue with my 100% gas and keep up with the Sta-Bil Marine.

How much stabil per tank? I haven't seen gasoline in the Chicago area with no ethanol in at least 10 years!

Best just to read the instructions on the Stabil. Formulations can change and since they write the recipe on the container and you need to use the contain when you add, then that should be enough information.

I was advised and given a little .5 oz. plastic vile to use at every fill up. So, just use the squeeze function of the Sta-Bill bottle (difficult to pour into tank) or get your own vile. .5 oz./tank of gas.
