A few questions from the new kid...

Postby arcticpilot » Sat Apr 17, 2010 2:46 am

First, This site is absolutely fantastic. You guys have helped me fix things on my wings I didn't even know needed fixing! For that, I think you all. Bravo!

Good sirs, I've been blessed with the rights to own and ride a full dresser in the great state of Alaska. Unworthy as I may be, It's nonetheless true. However all good things have a troubled side...

Now, If I may stir your noodles for a moment, I have a few problems with my newest ride that I would like to correct and your help would be.. well, helpful. She's a 1976 GL1000 strutting a Pacifico and dragging a set of (what I believe are) '80 Aspencade bags and box. Custom bitch saddle, raked bars, rocker boards, GPS, CD/rad, Carbon fiber, all the chrome and it's nicely hidden under a sexy cobalt blue airbrushed paint job. Yes, it just makes me harny looking at it. Now I'd like to ride it again longer than it takes for the battery to die...

I replaced the usual parts: gen, reg, fuses, wire checks, etc. Replaced the stock with a tractor battery, and still it won't charge. wtf guys? You can tell me if I'm stupid. I probably need to know before I get hurt.

Easy one here.. What's the widest tire I can stuff into the rear end?

My other question is about the fairing: It's what I believe to be a pacifico, but I can't find one that looks like mine. The sigs on the front are kind of set in a torpedo tubish fashion, the front over the light is Harley like and it has a stainless guard at the bottom of a docked windscreen (again, like a hawg..). I'm a Vetter guy. I don't know Pacificos from Oreos. Any help identifying this windbreak would be appreciated.

Much thanks in advance for your gracious replies.

Y.T.: The arctic pilot.

A stupid question, I know, but you did check the master fuse in the solenoid assembly, right?

Thanks for your reply.

Yessir, I checked all the pertinent fuses, wires, etc. I've been riding wings for as long as they've been making 'em. I'm fairly familiar with most of the electronic issues but this time I'm reaching out to those who might be more knowledgeable.

I'm obviously missing something rudimentary. There's a reason more people die from mosquito bites than tiger attack...

Have you checked the stator for output at the three yellow wires? How is the condition of the stator connector (up near the battery)?

Check the voltage at the 3 yellow wires. each should be about 65 Volt.. If not you have a bad stator..

I was told that a 130/90 x 17 is the largest tire. I have one on my 79 wing, and it fits in there pretty tight, but never has rubbed.
