1977 GL 1000 revs in waves?

Postby Reedcutter » Sat Jun 22, 2013 5:30 am

Hi all

I'm new to this forum and really would appreciate some feedback on your thoughts of causes for my symptoms . Bike been wrapped up but outside through our Scottish winter. This year I have replaced the standard coils with 3ohm dynas. And bypassed the ballast resistor as instructed by dyna. I'm running a dyna s ignition with all new ht leads and plug caps. I had her running fine for a few days but now she seems to rev and die and rev and die in waves at about 1200rpm. I static timed bike with a test lamp and lamp comes on as soon as F 1 or f2 show on flywheel. I carbs have been balanced and all seem fine. I've checked all valves and the are all correct. I read about an air cut off valve near carbs? Has anyone had this problem? Thanks in advance for any advice as I'm running out of ideas .

Sounds like an air leak. Cheapest part would be the o rings under each intake manifold. Check for a cracked one

Thank you for that . Il go have a look when the weather clears up. An air leak at manifolds does sound feasible . I've had that on a car in the past. Il let you know how I get on.
Many thanks
Kev

Right! I've had a look and started with manifold to cylinder #2 . Found this one has a well perished o ring. So I won't look any further until I've got four new ones to replace them all with. Fingers crossed this should be prob. Thanks again for your help Portugeezer. And il post to let you know how I got on after the fitting.

Hi all

Well , I'm stumped! Getting clouds of blue grey smoke on start up. Taking ages to clear. I it's running lumpy and uneven as hell. The bikes been standing for a few months on my drive with a cover on. Would it now be the carbs that I should be looking at? I set the screws on each to two turns out like I have read someplace. But it will start from cold but once warm it won't even fire. Replaced so far; coils for 3 ohm dynas, breakers for dyna s, manifold o rings, ht leads and caps for dyna leads with non resistor caps. I've checked timing,(static) all good, I've checked valves all good. The carbs were balanced last August when running . Would a bad battery cause all this or am I dreaming? Any suggestions would be great . Thanks in advance.
