Leaking Valve Covers

Postby steelersman72 » Wed Jun 26, 2013 5:23 am

I have a 76 GL1000 and I was wondering is anyone or has anyone had a problem with there valve covers leaking oil form the grommets or the gasket? I have replaced the grommets 3 times and the gasket 2 times but they keep leaking. If I torque it to the specks it leaks from the gasket and if I tighten it down the grommets crush and blow out and it leaks from there. I was thinking of drilling out the holes so the grommets actually fit into the hole better but I don't want to screw up the covers. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have the original bolts? Sounds like you don't. They have a shoulder that bottoms out to prevent over tightening and keeps the valve cover square with the head. There should also be a cupped washer under each bolt head that compresses the grommet correctly to prevent "blow out". If you over tighten the OEM bolts they will break, so be careful.

I don't know if I have the original bolts but there is a metal piece on the rubber grommet. Do you know where I can get the right bolts or see a picture of them so that I can compare it.

This is the bolt you should have.
