79 GL1000 Vetter cargo trunk mounts broken

Postby greganderson » Tue Jul 23, 2013 9:01 pm

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

79 GL1000 with Vetter package. The cargo trunk (top) has 4 nut/spacer/nut set-ups in each corner that attach to the bracket that attaches to the bikes chrome rear cargo rack.
The passenger leaned back and the whole trunk shifted. The two opposite corner pieces snapped, or were already worn out, and now I removed the trunk to repair it. Is this something anyone else has experienced, and if so, your recommendations?
Should i refer to Vetter for the parts or does anyone have a reference? Seems like an easy enough fix, but i would like to do it with
the correct replacement parts, or similiar, rather than just throwing new bolts on because it does required spacers.
Thanks in advance for your replies

I have seen them repaired over at NGWClub.com. They are not GL specific so bet there are good techniques on the web to be found via Google as well.

thank you
I will check into it....it seems Vetter went out of business in the early 80's and original parts may be hard to locate.
thanks again

They did, Greg, but the company has resurrected on a limited basis. It's basically being run by Carol Vetter. They offer limited restoration parts, but some of what is now available is a godsend to someone restoring a Windjammer.

One nice thing is that they will answer questions regarding old Vetter products. I needed input on the locking mechanisms for the bags and got a response straight from Craig.

Old UK Mini, before BMW. Exhaust mounts fit, if you didn't come right with Craig.

Are you talking about the rubber mounts? You can get them from Craig Vetter he's online but he gets $40 for a set of 4. They are 3/4" high. The rubber itself. Chamberlain sells them as isolators for garage door openers. The rubber part is also 3/4". The only difference is you have to drill the metal bracket out to accept 5/16" bolts. Those can be bought for under $10 a pair and work exactly the same.

yep, thanks. I went to local Bomgaars and purchased rubber cork stoppers for the mounts and yes drilled the holes...work great. Vetter wanted like $30+ for the set.
