speed vs rpm

Postby kirbb9 » Thu Aug 22, 2013 12:47 am

I did a speedo and tach rework with one of the ebay kits. Just so I can do some
checking does anyone know the mph at say 3 and 4 thousand rpm? The bike is a
78 but I would assume all years would be the same?

Thanks, Brady

My 76 is turning 4k rpm at 68 mph.

On my 1977, at an indicated 3K is see an indicated 50 mph. Understanding the speedo error, that would be more like 47 mph.

Thanks Fred, I figured there would be a little discrepancy due to different tires and wear.
I still have to check better, I was at less than 4k and was showing 72 or so. Traffic kept me
from doing much checking. You gotta be real careful when you put the needle back on the
speedo. Another lesson learned the same way I learn most of them!!

Pretty big difference from me. GPS 70 mph indicates 74 on my wing. And 74 mph on the speedo works out to 4400 rpm. So we are about 10% off between your 1978 and my 1977. Now regarding rpm, I do run a 16 inch rear rim with a 130/90 aspect tire so that does raise my RPM at a given actual speed. But we are 10% off and that does not seem reasonable.

This isn't a difference in bikes but when I put the speedo needle back on after a speedo rework.
The needle slides onto a small shaft and I wasn't careful about making sure the shaft was at the
zero mark on the face of the speedometer. Thanks again for everyone's help.
