Dirty oil filter engine noise

Postby Paulhy80 » Sat Sep 14, 2013 3:28 pm

As a new by to Goldwings I would appreciate some assistance from those that know.

Got a peachy 1976 GL1000 that has been stood up for about 2 years, all clean and dry and apart from a slight coolant leak and a layer of dust she is in good condition. I wanted to do a fluid change and cam belts so in preparation I ran her up on a bike lift after sorting the coolant leak out to get the oil warm to drain. During the run up there was a rattle towards the rear of the engine block, or it seemed that way, on draining the oil which was black I cut the oil filter and washed the paper element in fuel, and as a meter of course I ran a magnet through it,I found really fine particles on the magnet when wiped on a white shop wipe it turned into almost a smearable black paste.

Anybody got any ideas, had the cam covers off and they look ok, do clutches rattle and clatter??? Any help would be appreciated rather than just ripping the engine down.

Cheers

Paul

The 1000 was known to have a clutch bucket rattle.Annoying,no damage.
There are cures correct it, however the time and cost was not worth it.
You can verify If it's clutch noise.Idle the engine where you hear the noise.Pull some pressure on the cutch lever. The noise usually goes away.
If it's still rattles, sync the carbs. It will be a primary chain rattle.

Has anybody ever posted audio or a movie with audio on this site? It would be good to hear the actual noise.
