Knocking noise clutch area

Postby wayneswing » Mon Sep 23, 2013 9:20 pm

Anyone experienced knocking noise in clutch area? My GL1000 is knocking, sounds like a rod, but stethoscope says in clutch area. Clutch works fine, no change when clutch out or in. Noise loud at idle. Any suggestions?

If the noise goes away above idle you have the common older gl problem of primary chain knock. If all the cylinders aren't firing equally it will cause this. Synchronizing the carbs will eliminate the problem.

Thanks for that info. I would never have thought of the cam chain. I bought this bike not running and had to replace fuel pump, water pump, belts, and overhaul carbs. I carefully re-timed thinking that might be it. I will be syncing carbs today!
It's great having such a wealth of experience to draw from. Thanks again.

I meant primary chain, not cam chain!

Got the same noise, worse when cold and on the bike lift I guess because it is closer to my ear. Balanced carbs and I feel it is quieter well a bit quieter when warmed up and at idle. Anybody out there know what the fix is, yes I know change the primary chain but how bigger job is it??? Engine out I guess but do you have to split the crank case???.

I changed the primary chain on my GL1000 as I had a knock as well, Yes I would say a big job as engine has to be out and crankcase split. I was giving my engine an overhaul due to full restoring the bike and I was surprised at how much the chain was bending due to slack. New primary chain installed = nice and tight. Carbs are at the dealers being stripped, cleaned and set as my engine still hasnt been run since rebuild so fingers crossed when I fire her up next week she'll sing away once carbs are synced! :D

My honda CB400Four had a primary chain knock, Easiest way to tell was to put the bike in first gear and let the clutch bite. That scilenced the noise which sourced me to the primary chain but unsure if you'll get the same result on the goldwings... And it was louder when cold but soon as my engine reached operating temp it did quiet down a little.

I sync'd the carbs and the noise went away! #1 carb was way out of sync with the other three. Now the bike runs and idles smooth.
