GL1000 Final drive stripped

Postby Craigf » Sat Oct 05, 2013 11:45 pm

Hi there.... after much searching am unable to find much info on why my final drive splines have stripped.... twice now. First time I replaced entire final drive(pumpkin) with a good condition second hand unit. Didn't replace drive flange as it appeared ok. Do they they need to be replaced as a matched set?
I would appreciate help. :?:

Here's some information regarding final drives and the problems that can be encountered;

Mike Nixon's 'The Motorcycle Project' Web site: Final Drive Alignment

I also suggest that you visit Randakks site and read through this and this for additional information.

I suggest that you first try here for the parts you need. The owner is very knowledgeable and can most likely guide you though the issues you're having.

Got the bits and am having trouble removing drive flange from rear wheel.
Anyone got advice on how to best remove?
Manual says it should just pull out.

They can be tough to get out, particularly if they've been in there a while.

The first time I took the flange out on my 1100 it was in there good. I used a piece of wood (to avoid damaging soft aluminum) and used it to pry at the edge, a bit at a time. I did one side, then the opposite side, then 90 degrees from that, then the opposite side from that - bit by bit, to make sure it came out straight. It took a bit of effort, but it eventually came out.

Once I cleaned the pins and the holes up, it went back in with very little effort.

Wish it had been that easy. Invested in a gear puller and it was quiet an effort.

At last it is out.... 38 years of no lube will do that.

will post a pic of the stopped drive flange.

Now the re install...
