New engine parts, take it steady?

Postby pricey1123 » Sat Nov 16, 2013 2:04 pm

Hello, since my bike is becoming ever more closer to being road worthy after its long restoration. The engine is mostly new parts (big end bearings, conrod bearings, primary chain etc etc.... Question is should I treat it as a new engine? If so what would be the ideal RPM/speed limit for the first 500 miles or so? + Anything else I should take care with whilst 'bedding' in the new parts?

Many Thanks

P.S: GL1000KZ 1979 model.

do limit your extended high rpm and load for a while.Keep it reasonable and change the oil and filter after the 500 mile break in.Treat it like a new engine. It is one.
burst near red line once in a while very breifly. It should handle it fine if the rebuild is to factory specs.
Watch the temp.Never let it get hot/redline.
I kept mine below 4500 for the first few hundred before I pushed it up.
I never pushed redline till it was "seasoned" and then only once in a while.
after a few k miles running to redline in each gear was just scary fast.

You must get the ignition and carbs exactly right too.
Proper timing and sync makes the difference between a dog and a rocket.

Also check into the possible need to re-torque the head bolts after the first warm up.
