77gl1000 brake lights

Postby cuzn1952 » Mon May 03, 2010 12:26 pm

I recently bought a 77 and I am having trouble with a dim brake light. The manual talks about a reserve lighting function when a bulb has a bad element but the bulb tested OK. prvious owner has a cluster off add-on wiring under the seat for the Bates luggage (most of it is connected with alligator clips). Can I run a hotwire to the brake light switch to by-pass the harness under the false tank?

yes but you should hook it up the front brake switch too.. and you really should find the prolbem and fix it..things that get temp fixes tend to stay that way and that's not good especially brake stuff...

It could also be a problem with the earth.. A bad connection to negative, in that case replacing the wiring loom will not help.. Check your earth connections at the back and to the battery first.

Thanks for the replys. I finally did track it down to a badly corroded wire between the brake light switch and the brake light housing. removed the old and ran a new line. I gotta say it is great having this site to pick the brains of other wrench heads.
