Spare Engine, Storage?

Postby pricey1123 » Thu Dec 26, 2013 8:03 am

Hello, When I purchased my GL1000 I also brought a spare engine that came with the sale (Might as well since it was sitting with the bike  )

Anyways I want to rebuild this engine completely and keep it just incase the other has a turn for the worst (fingers crossed my current engine will last another 30+ years with service & maintenance). The only thing is it looks like its from an earlier model, The engine thats in the bike now is a 1979 engine with no kick start where as the spare does have a kick start so my guess is its an earlier model but I may be wrong.

So my questions are will it fit in the KZ frame if the spare is from a K0-K1-K2 model? And when this engine is complete it'll probably be in the garage or shed for quite a few years so whats the best way to keep it rust/seize free?

The engine will be fully rebuilt now as if I leave for 30+ years parts may no longer be available/very difficult to source

Long term engine storage.
I had a 1100 complete engine.Plugged every hole and FIlled it full of diesel fuel, including the cylinders.
Whatever it takes to keep the moisture out.

By full do you mean completely full or just where the high/low is on the engine oil check?

Absolutely full.no air with moisture to oxidize the metals.

1977 was the last year of the kick start. My 1977 has a 1978 engine and they are pretty close to identical in size less the kick start fitting. Your old cover would likely replace the one on the earlier engine (1975-1977) so it could be a dead ringer for the one you have.

The fill with diesel sounds like a great idea to store an engine. I keep going to mine spare to spray carb fogger into it. Not as good as a solution as mentioned above.

When I strip it I'll try find a spare rear cover that doesn't have a kick start, Saves messing around in the future and can just bolt on and be on the road again within a few hours. Also do the earlier model engines have different carbs? Will my carbs be compatible as the later model has a smaller bore diameter?

Hi. I have fitted a 1977 engine with kick start in my KZ "so I could still ride it in the summer" mine was playing up, once out I could checked out the engine knock and clutch plates. once i sorted it out so swapped them back and put it back in storage with its mate. I have just left the oil in and put some in the bores stored in a dry garage with a thick blanket covering them ;)
