Clutch slipping in 3rd, 4th & 5th gear

Postby pricey1123 » Tue Jan 28, 2014 10:08 am

Hello all, Long story short, I rebuilt my engine but didn't replace anything on the clutch because it looked in great shape, problem is its slipping in high gears but I'm not sure in low gears because I'm limited to 4500RPM with the new engine parts. Anyways I read about the type of oil used in the bike that can cause slipping so I'm going to do an oil change at the weekend with replacing the old oil for new shell mineral 10w 40 oil. Question is I have some seafoam in the garage so I am wondering if it would be a good idea to tip some in with the fresh oil incase some of the old oil doesn't get completely drained?

Cheers.

PS: The old oil is either 10w 40 part synthetic or fully synthetic, I can't remember. I slept since then but I definitely know its not mineral oil

I would try a straight motorcycle oil first, something designed for wet clutches. Run that for a bit and see if it improves at all.

Check your clutch cable and make sure it operates freely through its entire range. Mine started slipping and I only needed a new clutch cable. The old one was sticking and did not easily allow the free play to take up and fully engage the clutch. I have over 221,000 miles on my original clutch and it still works great. I've noticed smoother operation with new oil but never had any other slipping problem than the clutch cable.

The cable adjuster is only for taking up the slack in the cable, Make sure you have adjusted the clutch properly via the inspection hole in the rear of the clutch housing FIRST then adjust the clutch cable. have you looked in the gauze oil strainer in the bottom of the sump as any worn bits of the clutch end up in that.

I've re-adjusted the clutch at the back of the engine and the cable, also done an oil change with mineral oil and went out for a quick test ride and seems spot on. Opened the throttle fully for a brief few seconds and pulled like a train with no slip.

Thanks for the help guys.
