No spark on 1 and 2

Postby JellyBelly » Mon Feb 24, 2014 5:03 pm

So I replaced the timing belts on the old 78.
started perfect and took it for a spin.
This morning I go to start it up and I am not getting spark on 1 and 2. Should I immediately think of replacing the right coil or should i think that the timing might be off....even though it ran perfect yesterday? Coincidence or cause. It certainly will be easier to check the coil. Just wanted to see what ya'll thought.

More details please...
Does it still have points..?
Did you bump a wire loose from the coil.?

Yes on the points.
i wasn't near the coils so shouldn't have bumped anything.

Points have free motion and aren't burned, fouled, or dirty.

Fortunately one set is working. You can do comparisons.
I would start the easy way...Use your test light, probe the electrical connection at the points with the key on.Turn the crank slowly till each point opens and verify the test lamp lights.
If they both do,you could check to see If the timing is close.
Also at the point when there closed,If you snap one open with your fingernail,it should spark that plug.
Test this on each coil.Just 2 spare plugs on the left side.
If one point does not have volts when open, look at the connections.
Coils can be resistance measured without removing them.Remember comparison tests.

If ya wanna test further another way.....
Remove all 4 plugs, attach to the wires and lay them on the heads.....crank the engine and see which pair spark....
Swap the point wires.(the connectors)...test again....If the spark moves to the other coil,it's a point problem. If it stays,it's a coil problem.

Grrr... so confused right now. Coils tested fine off the bike. 2 caps tested and failed individually...but work when on the bike.

I must have a point problem. I guess I'll get into that next.

Still no spark on 1 and 2.

time to buy a continuity light tester.

Feel free to call me a dumb a##.

I see the point cam under This point assembly.. Am I right in thinking the point assembly adjustment is under the black plactic or have my points been replaced with a weird electronic one?

Do u think maybe i accidently loosened the stator bolt when changing the timing belts and that's whyIit ran fine once and now 1 and 2 get no spark...or is this just not related?

They appear to be electronic..
If it fires on 2 cylinders and there running properly, all the mechanical stuff must be OK..
I'd still proceed the same way...remove all the plugs and attach them to the wires...Swap the 2 wires on the coils that go to the ignition module(s)..not the 12 volt source...
If the spark follows the wires, your coil is OK and the problem is electronic.
If it fails on the same plug wires, suspect the coil, wires, caps, etc.

Split the system in half, pulse and drive vs. coil and spark.See which half doesn't work first

I don't know if what you have is a self contained ignition system or if there is a separate module(s) for the coil...eg,like the 1100..2 pulse coils,2 ignition modules,2 coils....
Dig around, follow the wires or see if there is any ID of what you have in there....
If it is after-market stuff, knowing its numbers can usually provide a install/trouble shooting manual.

I'm with Virgil on this one. Could be the electronic ignition with a bad pickup or a bad coil. Virgil's check will let you know which one.

My 77 had this same electronic ignition. the board (black plastic) cracked giving me a dead 1/2 of the engine. I replaced it with the Dynatek unit for about $125 on ebay and it doesn't use the condenser. Also a note if the cam gear moved and you were off by a tooth it would still fire just sound horrible. and if it was off by more than a tooth there would possibly be mechanical failure. good luck. I hate electrical problems too!

After I did the timing bet I took it for a spin and it ran perfect so I'm assuming the cams are set right....but u know what happens when u assume.

I had no spark on 1 and 3. Just a timing issue after I replaced the timing belt.

While I was at it I replaced coils and ignition with Dyna.

runs like a champ!!!
