Contemplating on water pump change, etc.

Postby Goldenroad66 » Mon Mar 03, 2014 9:26 pm

I purchased a 79' GL (24,900 miles) back in October and I'm about to tackle the timing belts. I've read that it's a good idea to replace the water pump, hoses, thermostat, fan motor, etc. as preventative measures while the radiator is removed. I haven't start anything yet but hearing about those darn philips heads on the front cover made me a little curious so I took a peak under and realized that all the philips heads have been replaced with hex's (sigh of relief) Now I'm wondering if the previous owner went ahead and replaced it, the seal kit, and the belts due the fact that ol' wing was sitting in a barn for 23 years. Unfortunately I can't ask him any of these golden questions because he recently passed away : (. What do you all think?

Well, you have evidence that a previous owner replaced it...but it could have been over 30 years ago.

Is it just me, or does this question come up at least once a week?

I'm just going to take the safe route and get it all done.

Do your research if you are contemplating using aftermarket parts. As in water pump. There are some garbage units out there. I think OEM is still available.

OEM units (new) are definitely available, and this is also definitely something you should NOT use aftermarket (or used) parts for.
