Corbin saddles for 1979 Honda Gold Wing 1000

Postby asf93555 » Thu Apr 24, 2014 8:46 pm

I bought a ’79 GL1000 that was disassembled. It came with a Gun Fighter seat which made the sale. As I’m completing the reassembly, I discovered the seat would not mount because the lower front was interfering with the false tank sides. I removed the tank sides and the seat slips right in. But of course now the sides won’t install because there is more than a half inch of interference/overlap between the lower front of the seat and the tank sides. I contacted the seller and he said he had the same problem.

Corbin sells the seat as fitting 75 through 79 models, but it certainly is not going to fit mine without modifications. Is this a common problem or am I missing something ?

As you stated, Corbin sells that seat to fit the '75 through '79. If it's not fitting, I'd contact them with your concerns. Send them photos of the seat as it sits on the bike, showing the area of concern. They are a very responsive company and I'm sure they'd help you.

I did a little research for you on the NGW. Go there and read this thread from end to end. It will help you out. Apparently, Corbin needs to be a little more accurate with their seat descriptions.

I have a 1978 GL1000 upon which I've installed a Corbin Touring style seat. It's a beautiful thing. It's been in use now for 6 years and over 100,000 Kms., and it still looks like the day I bought it. I take it off the motorcycle every winter, treat it with Meguiar's Gold Leather Treatment, and that's all I ever do to it.
I only have one complaint about it. When the seat is in place it sits in a position that won't allow the removal of the side covers, that are over the battery and the fuel tank. Those covers, after they are unlatched, must be lifted about 3/4" for removal but the low position of the seat won't allow it. The seat hold-down bolts must be removed, and the seat lifted. No big deal, just somewhat inconvenient at times when you wish to access the battery or rear brake fluid etc..

The photo attached was taken just after purchase, but it still looks exactly the same today.

Common problem for Corbin seats. You can get the side covers off on my GL1500 with its Corbin, but after I put a Corbin on my wife's PC800, the seat must be removed to get the side covers off.

At least it's insurance against losing expensive side covers in the wind!

I had that problem with my 79. The corners of the seat fouled the corners of the side covers. I found that I could slide a thin piece of stainless, (like a thin putty knife) between the two in order to help them pass one another and I could swing the side cover past the seat corner. Akin to putting on shoes with a shoe spoon. Once positioned that way it rode fine and never caused trouble. Corbin seats don't EXACTLY fit but they are very good seats.
