Won't kickstart

Postby GBG » Wed May 07, 2014 12:13 pm

Ok recently got a GL1000…The bike wont start using the starter due to the inner upper gear as given out…But my question is : Is there a trick to kick starting this machine…First kicking it over it feels like there’s no compression it kicks through so easy…So I jumped the gun and tore into the engine…Checked the timing adjusted the valves…put it back together and it still feels like nothing…It does have compression…But still feels like there’s nothing…Ok maybe I got the wrong idea since I’m use to Triumphs / Suzuki’s even V twin’s..Where you kick it / pull it over you get the compression noise…I cant feel the resistance while kicking it as it goes through cylinder to cylinder and it doesn’t make that baffle noise…Whats up with it any ideas on how to get this running without tearing the engine out and redoing that top inner related starter gear.

Well, your read more link does not go anywhere...

I ran a 78 for many years(11)...I was able to kick start it once....just once...
The kick starter just doesn't spin the engine over enough times to really get it to fire up....I think a full stroke of the kick start lever rolls the engine a full turn or so...
The only time I 'got it'...I operated the lever till I felt resistance on a compression stroke...reset the lever back up again and stomped on it.....
Couldn't do it twice in a row EVER.
The bike in OEM condition is difficult to cold start anyways....I added a electronic ignition and electric fuel pump to dramatically improve cold starts .

What's the problem with the electric start????

Keep in mind a stock ignition system uses ballast resistors to cool the spark once the engine starts. It does this via the starter button. When you kick start, you so not get the hotter spark via the starter button so you also have this colder spark disadvantage.

You were able to kick start a 78 GL1000?

Nice trick, wanna tell me how you did that when there's no provision to do so.

Sure...Open your right shelter...Hopefully the kick start lever is still there...mine was...
Remove it from it's holder and insert the round end into the kick starter receiver at the rear left side of the engine....Push down to engage it and roll the engine over...
I actually used it mostly to set the timing...

Here's video from you-tube for the 76 model...My 78 was the same..

Here's the kick start lever that you should have..

Then you either:

- Don't have a 1978 (the kick starter was deleted from the 1978 and 1979 models)
- Have a pre-1978 engine in your bike
- Have had someone add the rear engine cover and kick starter from a pre-1978 engine to your bike

Exactly my point, thanks.

Unfortunately I sold the bike several years ago(what a rocket)...it was used when I purchased it from the honda dealer back in 1981.Had only 15k miles.pristine condition too.
It was vin number plated as a 1978,had a kick starter lever in the shelter and (as far as I was aware) was OEM.Points and all.

Interesting.....ya just never know.
Kind of a mute point as far as the original post goes.
