1979 GL 1000 Tires

Postby omw41 » Sat May 22, 2010 7:41 pm

1979 Gold Wing 1000

I just bought the bike. I need new tires. Thanks to the info learned in the DIY section on date codes and the presence of dry rot, there is no doubt they have to come off. I am a little confused though.

Right now the front tire says: MM 90-19-61-H. I know what the H and the 19 mean, but I'm not sure about the 90 and the 61. My front rim size says: 19 x 1.85.

My rear tire reads: MT 90 B17-76-H. The rim size is 17 x 2.50

Here are the tire sizes I think will fit:

front=100x90x19.
Rear: 130x90x17.
Am I right?

If I am right, you can just say yes. If I am wrong, please school me.

I love the site and I just got my Honda GL 1000 Service Manual from my Honda Dealer. He sold me his shop copy. Charged me 60 Bucks, but I have saved way more than that already. As I get deeper into my bike I will offer some ideas and advice to other members.

Thanks

Keep it between the ditches

That's alpha code:

For front tires:

MH90 = 80/90 (metric), 2.50/2.75 (inch)
MJ90 = 90/90 (metric), 2.75/3.00 (inch)
MM90 = 100/90 (metric), 3.25/3.50 (inch)
MR90 = 120/90 (metric), 4.25/4.50 (inch)
MT90 = 130/90 (metric), 5.00/5.10 (inch)

For rear tires:

MP85 = 110/90 (metric), 4.00/4.75 (inch)
MR90 = 120/90 (metric), 4.50/4.75 (inch)
MT90 = 130/90 (metric), 5.00/5.10 (inch)
MU90 = 140/90 (metric), 5.50/6.00 (inch)
MV85 = 150/80 (metric), 6.00/6.25 (inch)

So yes, the sizes you're looking at are correct.

I have no idea why they make this so complicated!

Bridgestone makes a Spitfire front 90/90 x 19 and rear 130/90 x 17 that work real good.

Also, look at your wheel bearings! An ounce of prevention....
