New combined Rectifier Regulator on GL1000

Postby GL1000-1976-SCX-593P » Wed Jul 16, 2014 12:50 pm

Hi All,
I have just purchased this combined Regulator/rectifier but no fitting instructions have come with it, I have e-mailed the supplier but I am keen to get it fitted, any assistance in the fitting method would be a help.
I believe the unit with the 3 wire connection gets discarded and the connections blanked off and the eight connection unit is replaced.

Thanks John

Update, fitted the new REG/REC to the bike but there is only one drawback it has 8 wires and the old one only had 7 so I,m not sure if anything has to be done with the extra wire, I put the voltmeter on the battery and started the bike and it was registering over 16 volts not sure if thats good or bad..
removed the regulator and left the 3 pin plug loose for the moment, will blank off as soon as I'm confident that everything is working ok, removed the rectifier LH side of battery box and fitted the new one.
Just cant work out why the new part didnt have some basic fitting info??

Was thinking to change the main 30amp fuse to a proper spade type fuse, to upgrade the original whilst I'm in the side panel??

The new module has 2 red,2 green,3 yellow and a black wire.
It needs to be attached too.Its bike wire went to the 3 prong plug.the green and yellow are not needed but the yellow should be insulated.
Hook the bike black wire from the 3 prong plug that went to the old regulator to the new regulator module black wire.
The difference is the old system had a separate regulator from the diodes , the new one is built in.
By the way 16 volts is too high.
Expect 14.5 volt max at 3500 rpm.16 volts will boil your battery and ruin it.
Get the volts down

Thanks for your reply, as a matter of interest how would I reduce the volts its putting out??
Could the over charge be because I hadnt connected the black wire to anything?

Yes.that black wire is used as a reference for the battery volts.if the regulator "sees" a low voltage there it tries to raise the voltage output of the charging system.

Thats great, Ive been back out to the bike and checked what you told me and I will extend the black wire into the old male side of the plug and that will complete the circuit, I will check it again when ive done it.
I really appreciate your help, not being a mechanic I have limited knowledge of how things are done but if helped like you have done I have all the tools and can get it done and save loads of trips to the motorcycle mechanics workshop. saving lots and I do enjoy doing the jobs.

Thanks again.

I have connected the black wire and heat shrunk sealed the two dead ones tried the output again and it maxed out at 14.70 revving at about 4000RPM.
I am going to change the 30amp fuse at weekend and I'm hoping that will sort out all the problems with battery going flat. think the regulator was not working correctly before.

Thanks again for the help.

Sounds like you got it charging fine.Good job.
Have you thought about changing the timing belts yet?
There's never a shortage of things to do to a wing.
By the way.Try not to add on a bunch of extra lights unless there LED.
The charging system is running near max when the bike is stock.
Add just 2@ 55 watt halogen driving lights and it won't keep up.You'll end up with a dead battery.
Try to keep it as close to OEM as possible.

Your right about there always being something to do, had the timing belts done last winter when the engine was removed for repainting, hoping that we can now put some miles on the clock doing the most important job, enjoying riding!
:D
