engine out for clutch...what else should i replace

Postby twostrokes48 » Sat Jul 19, 2014 5:14 pm

Have been able to get back on my 75 restore project from last year....Now have engine out to replace clutch...What else should I replace while the engine is out? Within reason that is....Have rebuilt starter I'm putting in, I understand a neutral switch is recommended....anything else??

Pull and rebuild your neutral switch.
Consider replacing both your temp. and fan switches.
Pull the oil screen cover and clean the screen.
How's your stater?
Pull your sprag clutch and clean the rollers and bearings.
Replace timing belts if over 5 years or 25K.
How do your belt tensioners sound and roll? Smooth and quiet? If not, replace or rebuild.
Original water pump with (brown) Bakelite impeller head? Replace it whether it's leaking or not.
Pull your fuel pump top. Diaphragm cracking, checked or leaking from weep hole? Replace the pump.
Thermostat.
Hoses.

Thanks for the reminders. Had about half of them on my list, so now will take care of the others.

if anyone else can think of anything else, chime in...Don't want to keep this engine out forever ordering parts or making myself do some work to get things fixed.

All of what Placerville said and maybe some of the seals, shifter seal, drive shaft seal. If they don't leak now, they will later.

Just be careful and consider your timing to have her back on the road. You need to get a ride in during August if possible. Many of those things are not bad with the engine in the frame, but certainly you need to balance the shorter labor time now and cost.

Yes, I have been looking at what can wait, not really for riding time, this is wing #5 so I have plenty to ride. Actually, I have too many, and it is hard to keep them all going. I try to ride a different one each time I go out to keep them limber. Anyway, I will evaluate what I actually do not or put off. I still have a lot of other stuff to do too, like fork seals and new oil, get tires replaced, a couple cables, rebuild calipers, new brake pads, and try to either touch up the paint, or repaint it. Haven't made up my mind yet if I want to try to keep the stock color, or go for custom. I really would like to find the same shade of purple I had on my original 75 that was custom painted, but that's just a wish...we will see and that can be done later. Hopefully I can just get more done before I get sidetracked again like last time, it has taken months to get back to this thing. I would like to get it on the road some day before I go ride the big twisties in the sky. lol.

Oh, did not know you had options. That does change things a bit. We do want you to ride this one on US roads before the big twisties in the sky. So maybe put off the paint for a bit and just touch up now. These panels come off very easy, and it is not that expensive to get another set of skins and have purple all ready to go in the off season. All the best to your build.
