Carb setup help please!?

Postby eekclegzed » Tue Aug 19, 2014 5:20 am

I have reconditioned my 1978 GL1000 carbs, i have put the butterfly shafts back in but unsure on the way it goes together on one side.. im pretty sure i have carbs 2 and 4 correct with the small spring inserted between both shafts..
carbs 2 and 4
carbs 2 and 4

But im not 100% on carbs 1 and 3, i had a slightly bigger spring and it just looks wrong. The manual doesn't make it clear at all where the spring goes but here's what i have come up with... if anyone can help me out here it will be much appreciated :)

The spring on 1/3 is incorrect. The springs on 1/3 and 2/4 are identical. Also the sequence between the linkages is washer, nut, spring on both sides. Looks to me like 2/4 is correct but not 1/3.

Carbs #2 and #4; the adjuster should be inboard of the carbs, not outboard. You have the shafts the wrong way round and the adjuster therefore are upsidedown. It should be like your pic of #1 and #3. The shaft spring is correct.

On the other spring. That is obviously not meant to be fitted there. I think that spring is the one that should be fitted as in red circle in the diagram.

'Impossible' is just a level of difficulty! The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask first!

Randakk's hint: Hint: there should be a washer on either side of the synchro link which joins the throttle butterfly shafts of each carb pair on the left (2/4) and right (1/3) sides. Ditto for the left carb pair to right carb pair balancer. Obviously, this must happen before the intakes are on.
