Installing aftermarket mufflers on my 77 GL1000

Postby ezridermn » Wed Aug 20, 2014 4:37 pm

I have read many threads about putting aftermarket mufflers on a GL1000. Clearly doing it is something relatively common. What I haven't read much about is how to do it when the aftermarket muffler has a 1 3/4" opening. Since that opening is a bit bigger than the stock muffler/header system it seems there needs to be a bit of fabrication involved to make it happen properly. I would like to mount the muffler directly on the header if possible. I read somewhere about crafting a shim to put in between the muffler and the header. Seems like that might be a workable solution. Are there other ways to get the job done that would work better in your opinion?

Anyhow, I would appreciate hearing the "how to" from people who have put on mufflers with 1 3/4" openings. Thanks in advance for the help!
