Frame ID Number

Postby GwingersDRB624 » Fri Sep 19, 2014 10:48 pm

Does the frame ID number on the deep lower right handle bar, trace the bike to the owner? I am 100% sure I know who the owner is (who passed away in 2009) The bike is a 1976 GL1000 best I can tell from researching the web. I am in hopes the number I have can act as verification to prove I know who the owner was and that there is no lien on the poor thing. (It is salvage)
Thanks for ANY ideas.

The number you're talking about is on the right side of the steering neck. It's the serial number of the frame and was the precursor to todays' VIN numbers established many years later. On the left side of the steering neck, there should be a silver and black metal plate affixed with rivets. It should have that same serial number along with the month and year the bike was manufactured.

You don't make it clear why you need to 'prove' the identity of the previous owner. However, it really doesn't matter. Your question should be directed to your states' Department of Motor Vehicles. They should be able to tell you whether there are any existing records for this serial number. If any complications arise from registering the bike, they will be the ones to direct you. Note: My bike is a 1976 model however, the plate on the left side of the steering neck indicates that it was manufactured in November of 1975.
