Front and rear master cylinder rebuild kits

Postby Calamity » Mon Jun 21, 2010 6:18 pm

Okay, I am really new to this! I recently purchased a 1979 GL1000, with 28,000 miles on it. We have already found that I need a new starter, (the one on it is chewed up on the back end of the armature), and the rear brakes have been cleaned. The mechanic found, however, that they bled off the next day. I am assuming that I have to rebuild the rear master cylinder, and intend to do the front as well. The bike hasn't seen pavement for two years, so I consider it a matter of safety. My question is; will a rebuild kit for the GL1100 work for my bike? I am having a hard time finding one for the 1000 online. I have a local shop that will order in the parts, but if I can find it myself, I figure that I will save a few bucks along the way. I have checked out Partsnmore as mentioned in the rebuild instructions...

Partsnmore has a rebuild kit for the 1979 GL1000 rear master cylinder here: Partsnmore.com GL1000/GL1100 Chassis Parts

It's the fourth item down on the page. They've also got one for the front, farther down on the page.

Thank you for your info. I did manage to find a parts store who had what I needed for a good price. I will be following your step by step instructions to do the rebuilds; I find that even this novice can understand and follow the simple instructions.
