Post by drvirago777 » Sat May 16, 2015 1:48 pm

Are all the GL1000 Carburetors Interchangable?
Or are they differences in the eariler and later models?
I have Rebuilt a set of 1976 GL1000 Carburetiors and a Customers wants to
know if they will Operate correctly on his 1979 GL1000.
I need to know this Info for Future Reference too.

Will they operate, yes, but......
Are they correct, no.
75-77 carbs are 32mm bore, 78-79 are 31mm bore with different jetting. The earlier carbs could give a boost, but to get that it really needs the earlier cams and ignition timing too. You may find without doing that, that the jetting is out.
Depending on the way the bike is ridden, the owner may not notice any problems.
Carb numbers:
1975 - 755A and 755B (Europe)
1976 - 758A
76 LTD - 763A
1977 - 764A
----------------
1978 - 769A
1978 - 771A (California)
1979 - 771A

Hi, i have a 1976 gl1000 and i imported it from the states 2 years ago.
I have had a local bike mechanic fit Dyna electronic ignition in place of the points system and had the carbs stripped and ultrasonically cleaned and rebuilt but unfortunatly she runs like a bag of mad squirrils, the tick over is uneven and thats on a good day, or shes wont start at all without a lot of cranking her over and even if she starts she runs uneven and appears to be not firing on the ront left cylinder even though im getting a good spark there.
I removed the plug and checked the compression and thats spot on and when cranking her over there is a lot of mist coming from the spark plug hole.
I have paid the only two so called mechanics local to me in portsmouth united kingdom and spent a ridiculas amount of money but each time i get the bike back shes absolutly terrible.
I have a set of carbs with the number 758A stamped on them which are for my year and model and i also have a set with the number 755B.
Im now no longer in a position to spend any more money on my bike let alone give it to so called mechanics who to be honest dont know what they are doing.
Im a disabled veteran with very limited income and cant seam to find anyone who knows what they are doing.
Could you please give me some pointers and info which might help me sort out my dream bike once and for all and hopefully get her running nicely once again?.
I look forward to your eply.
Regards
Vic

It sounds like the carbs rebuild was not done correctly.
Well now, maybe I can work something out for you.
Here is my web page explaining all about it but I'm going to send you a PM as well.

Hello Mudge:
I also have a 78' Gl1000 which I'm restoring, with some experience from a previous '78.
Having Dyna ign. it should run like a charm.
Carburation on this bike is a litlle peaky, if they aren't well sychro it won't run well.
Yuo can check it yourself, take a look at the blog tech in site www.randakks.com, there is a lot of info about the Gl1000, what to whatch for and how.
I'm also a cheap guy LOL, that likes to do all the job by myself.
If you need more info just ask. (PM me if you want.)
regards
