78 GL1000 wont idle

Postby steveclk » Wed Jun 17, 2015 6:35 am

starts right up and runs fine, just won't idle. I purchased an air cut off valve repair kit and installed it, put some seafoam in the gas, replaced the fuel filter, synchronized the carbs, adjusted the air fuel mix to initial setting of 1.5 turns out (per specs). The carbs were out and recently so it shouldn't need that. I'm getting about 34 mpb around town so what is keeping it from idling?

How far down can you get the RPM?
Idling requires each cylinder to fire using the slow speed jet circuit, correct spark, enough compression and valve timing/lash and air flow.
Obviously one or more isn't correct.
First identify which cylinders are having problems.Start the bike from dead cold.Keep the RPM as low as possible.Prefferbly below 1k.Even if it stumbles badly.Run the engine for just 6-8 seconds.Lightly tap each header to find which one(s) are cold.A cold header is a non firing cylinder.
From there,check compression,Ignition timing,valve lash,plug condition,spark quality.

Cleaned but not rebuilt?

Have they ever had a total rebuild?

Could be a bad battery ground and/or bad condenser ground. Try temporarily bypassing resistor ballast on your coils (ceramic-looking brick) and see if that helps it idle... it will give you a stronger spark at idle. Just don't leave it this way forever or you'll burn up your points and overheat the coils. Solution is to run a new ground from the condensers to a motor mount bolt. The battery box itself is prone to corrosion... bad place to ground the condensers.
