Front Wheel Shimmy / Wobble

Postby jonielsen » Mon Jul 05, 2010 11:54 am

Hi. I just got an GL1000/1977 with 50000km. See Member Pictures.
It is realy an nice wing, but it does something funny. When I start from stop and make a sharp left or right turn the front wheel start shimmy / wobble, but as soon I am in normal driving position the problem is gone. Does someone out there know the cause of this?
New member fra Denmark and I am realy impressed how many information one can get from this site. :D

Have you checked the steering head bearings? With such a long wheelbase machine these can be sensitive. You will have to raise the machine whilst on its centre stand with a good quality jack to get the front wheel off the ground.( don not forget to put a piece of wood between the jack and the bottom of the engine casing or you may damage something!)
Try to rock the wheel fore and aft which will give an indication of worn headstock bearings.
Do you also have the front tyre as specified by Honda and is its rotation correct?
Wrong tyre selection can also cause weave at higher speeds
Good luck

+1 on your steering head bearings. You may only need to tighten. But, as long as you've got the thing up on the jack, why not replace?

Check all the fork pinch bolts are tight and also check for wear in the fork sliders. You will need to remove the wheel and fender/mudguard to check this.

'Impossible' is just a level of difficulty! The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask first!

Also consider other causes - I had a wobble this spring that got worse with speed, and it turned out to be incorrectly installed and torqued rear swingarm pivot pins.
