broken clutch cable -1978 gl1000

Postby TheRobbie1950 » Tue Aug 04, 2015 7:19 am

Ok, here goes...........My wife and I are doing our roadtrip from Saskatchewan to the Maritimes and back but around Ajax, Ont. while on the return trip, there was a huge thunder storm that slowed the 6 land traffic to a stop start crawl, and therefore excessive use of the clutch. Yep...it broke. I only had about 20 minute more before reaching relatives in Scarborough, Ont. Anyway I was able to limp it along the side of the freeway in first gear, knowing that if I stopped that it would be where the bike stayed. I made it to the off ramp and limped to a shell gas station where I made arrangements with the relatives and CAA to get the bike to their place.

My question is can I change the clutch cable roadside? That is without tearing the bike apart. My first search yields no actual 1978 GL1000 clutch change instructions. I read the 1100 tutorial and it looked easy enough, however when I looked at my bike I am going to have to get at it from the back of the engine.
So again, my question is can all of this be done with the bike as is, or is it a major tear down that is required?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

It's not difficult other than lacing the cable in the same place as the original.I think I just lifted the seat and false tank.
As a stop gap till you get home, you can drape it on the outside.beware of binding when moving the handlebars.

Thanks Virgil, actually after I sent my message I was able to get to it and and removed the old cable. I am hoping my new one will be here tomorrow afternoon.
I hope the install goes as well as the removal did.
Cheers.

Good.
Adjusting it is the hardest part.Preset the knurled nut and holder at the grip about 4 turns out..take up most of the slack at the engine side then "fine tune" the lever end play at the lever.leave a bit of end play so there is no pull on the cable at the clutch arm.
