Calling all electical gremlin guru's

Postby maintainer » Tue Oct 13, 2015 8:24 am

The bike: 1977 GL 1000 Project

Just got bike together and have had it running. Too many weird electrical issues to test ride yet.

I redid a lot of crummy wiring and connections done by P.O. with the proper new connectors and dialectic grease.

Battery is new connections are clean and tight.
All the fuses are good.

I have posted this on other forums and had little to no help.

I have just a myriad of odd electrical issues most are random a couple are constant.

They seem to all be issues that work thru the ignition switch.

Indicator lights work randomly: oil light, neutral light, fuel gauge, temperature gauge. Nothing comes on consistently, just a light here or a gauge there then next time the key is turned on, nothing.

Also the start button and headlight, I even swapped the start button but sometimes it works other times nothing. The headlight has never came on and may be bad, yet to be determined.

Feel like I am chasing my tail, one try certain things work then on the next attempt they don't. There is no consistency, it's not an all or nothing type situation, just sporadic things working here or there.

Hi.
The first thing that springs to mind is a faulty ignition switch. Second is an intermittent connection to the fuse box. Thirdly, one or more bad earths.

Pulled the upper engine support that bolts thru the main ground ring connection. It was nasty, shined everything up and reassembled. This seemed to help but still had some intermittent electrical issues. Next I removed the old glass barrel fuses and shined up their terminals, this seems to of fixed everything but the headlight. Onward to test switches etc and try to get the headlight to work now.

Have you cleaned up the battery ground cable where it connects to the frame?

Have you bypassed the RLU? Is the headlight itself good? Do you have voltage to it? The contacts in the switch may need cleaning or may be so worn that it needs to be replaced.

Keep your expectations tiny and you won't end up so whiny.
