1979 gl1000 problems all hell broke lose

Post by firagate » Fri Nov 13, 2015 6:29 pm

ok so earlier today i had my bike running perfectly no problems at all shut her down let it sit for about 2 hours went back and when i turned the key the first thing i noticed was the high beam light was on on the dash but the switch was not on high and the light was not on either then i noticed the right turn signal was on but the switch was not engaged now i can engage the switch and the light gets brighter but it does not turn off
but i decided to ignore it went to go start the bike and now i cannot get her to idle let alone stay running
keep in mind i had it running perfectly only a few hours earlier
after a while of trying to get her to idle now i cant even get it to reve up just dies even with the choke on the head light comes on when it wants to and the right turn signal stays on now im almost positive the carbs are clean considering i have 2 fuel filters 1 from the tank to the pump and one from the pump to the carbs
what could this be why would all this go wrong if anyone has any ideas i cannot figure out what happened :o

Strange combinations going on. Any wiring history to go with this bike, splices? Fairing or not? Maybe pull the fuses that are not required for starting and running to see if the bike runs better, then add one fuse at a time to see which circuits may cause a problem. That may give you a place to start. Any unfused circuits? Any direct wiring to the battery?

+1 especially the main ground ring connector for corrosion where it connects to the upper engine mount. If corroded it will cause some freakish electical issues.

No RLU on the 1979, so a ground issue seems most probable.
