kickstart not working

Postby Andrew M. » Sat Nov 14, 2015 2:35 pm

Hello, I recently bought a 1975 gl1000 and bike trailer for 500 bucks. My first gl. I went through pulled the plugs put oil in cylinders got them moving after couple days, by using 12mm bolt end on all end. I tried to use kickstart and it will not move motor. Also I cannot move while in 1st gear to spin motor while wheel is lifted. I'm still new to working on bikes. Where do I start?

To attempt to turn the motor over:

Remove sparkplugs
Find stator generator bolt cover and remove it (the round cover right beside the kickstart mechanism)
Attach an offset closed end spanner/wrench 12mm I think to the exposed generator/stator bolt
Turn generator/stator bolt CAUTION (in clockwise direction only)
This shoud turn it if it's not seized.

Ive used that to turn it over. The kickstart does not work though. It's not engaging.

I'm trying to figure out why it won't move while in gear or why kickstart doesn't work. It kicks but has no tension just pushes down very easily.

It sounds like the kickstart mechanism is broken it works like a rachet solid downward then rachets back upward normally.
Try a higher gear or even 5th, that should make it easier to turn with the rear wheel, 1st gear would make it the toughest to move.
