Front turn signals

Postby Photog101 » Mon Jul 26, 2010 1:06 pm

I am restoring a 1979 GL 1000 and it used to have a Vetter Fairing on it. Whoever removed the front turn signals, also sawed off the mounting ears (it looks like they sawed them off). If I purchase new turn signals, will the ears come with them? Or is there another alternative to hang the original turn signals?

I also need the headlight assembly, and was wondering if previous years will also work in the 1979.

I think 75-79 are the same. There are lots of creative ways to install turn-signals. Take a look at some of the wing sites and you will see different ways of mounting them. When you say the "sawed off the ears" do you mean the post that threads into holes on the side the forks just below the headlight? Look at some detailed pictures of your bike to ensure yourself of the exact location. If the post has been sawed off (would be a strange thing to do) perhaps you could just work out the remaining piece and thread a new turn signal light assembly in it. If you had a link to a picture of your bike it would be easier to understand.

First, I don't just want to hang turn signals on for the sake of having turn signals. This is a full out restoration.

ONce I have all the parts, I'll pull it down, and completely rebuild the whole machine. Right now, the only parts missing are Headlight mount, Exhaust and those pesky front turn signals. I am sure that once I pull it completely down, I'll find a few more that need to be rebuilt or replaced. Lots of small items will go out for show chroming with a fresh coat of paint and the factory stripes will be hand painted. I'd like to have all the parts so that come this winter, I will have the project ready to go.

My '76 GL1000 is different. Where you have ground off tabs, I have threaded holes. My turn signals will simply go from the threaded holes on the vetter fairing to the threaded holes on the bracket you have pictured. I don't know what your's looked like in stock configuration. So the answer to your original question is: turn signals from a 1976 GL1000 are not interchangeable with your 1979. Perhaps other models are.

I think you will find that this style of turn signal was only fitted to the American Market 1979 model. The 75 to 78 model had round lens, the 79 had the rectangular version like the other large Hondas of that period i.e. the twin cam 750s / 900s. You will either need new mountings or re engineer new 'Ears' to suit the housings for the lamps.
Uk and Europe still used the round lamps on the 1979 model, it was almost the 1778 US model!

Hope this helps,

Michael

The previous owner to my 1979 did exactly the same thing! Sawed them off. Your pictures could have been taken of my bike! What a "permanent" way to work...in the wrong way. Did you ever figure out what to do, or where to get the part WE need to install turn signals again? Luckily, I am making a hack out of mine, so I really only need one side...but if I'm going to replace the bracket, I might as well do both. If you found a source, please let me know!

I own a 79 and have enclosed a picture. My turn signals are round. The piece you need ( part #16 ) can be found in this parts fiche I have provided for you.

I guess my bike must have been made during the "transition" to the 1980, as it has the "rectangular" shaped signals. These require the tabs, such as were in one of the links you sent me (those tabs had been bent to accommodate the fairing). But, the link to the other list had a set of n.o.s. oem ones, just as I needed. Considering the bike I am putting them on is in near perfect condition, I didn't mind buying "new" ones! Thank you SO much for the links!! Now it's time to tear into things and get 'er put together.... Brett

You're welcome Brett. Good luck with the restoration and post some pics when you're done so we can have a look.

Mike,

I was lucky enough to find one in unbelievably good condition. Here are some shots to show just how clean it is. I am going to add the Velorux sidecar once I get the wiring from the bike all set. I did upgrade the brakes, as I think the rotors on the bike were possibly the originals. Thank goodness EBC makes rotors for the bike! I'll be posting pictures of the finished hack when I get it done!
