78 gl1000 keep stalling out

Postby bell777 » Mon Jul 26, 2010 4:27 pm

Just bought a 78 gl1000. Ran great then after filling up the tank for the second time it starting running very rough. Now I have a hard time getting started, and when I do, it stalls within minutes. Changed the fuel filter, plugs but no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions.

Sounds like rust in the fuel system. The first (and easiest) thing I would do is remove the fuel line and backflush the lines in the tank. I put a short fuel line on the fuel valve and with an air hose hose, give a gentle squirt of air back into the tank. Squirt both reg. and reserve position. Make sure the cap is loose. You will hear it floweasily if the tubes and screen is clear. You can look down a bright light afterwards and see how much rust was stirred up.
If it still stalls as before, the culpret may be rust in the little screens found under the float seats. You'll have to pull the carbs to get to these. I just went through this with my 82. Over the years, some superfine rust will make it past the main filter and clog these up. You will find it to look like the snuff my Granny used to dip.
