GL1000 Gold Wing

My GL has a mid range RPM miss----It idles fine and accelerates fine----I donot think its Points or plugs --because it starts and accelerates well! I do have the motion pro carb synchro kit and that seems to work OK! But it seems easier to balance the carbs by ear even better.. The engine flutters and sputters at normal running--at mid range RPM"s Any suggestion? Fuel filter maybe? timing? carb balance? Points/Condensor?

Midrange problems...Hmmm.
Is the sputtering in the exhaust or intake?
Have the valve lash been set?
Have the points been set by the "split the difference" method?
What do the spark plugs look like?
If you add a bit of choke during sputtering does it get worse or better?..(lean or rich).
Is the compression equal (+ - 5psi) and what is it?
Have you watched the carb slides as the engine is revved up for smooth and equal movement?
Above and below the sputtering range, does it run well?
Carb sync is a good thing and usually affects the idle range...However,I've seen a wing run pretty good on 2 cylinders. The two rear carbs were late bloomers.
a restricted exhaust caused me a poor running engine too.The inner thermal liner was swelled almost shut.

Exhaust sputter mostly---Valve lash has been set ---I will check the points and plugs again --what is split the difference?
choke is in engine is warm --still sputters! #1 cylinder has low compression--under 100.----runs well above sputter--
How do I fix a swollen exhaust?? Engine has 42,000 miles---

OK.what is the compression on the others.
Engine specs call for no more than 5 psi difference.

Is that compression figure with the choke in and the throttle wide open, because it's extremely low for a good running engine?

'Impossible' is just a level of difficulty! The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask first!
