1975 gl 1000 clutch

Postby Francis osborn » Tue Aug 16, 2016 10:11 am

I recently bought a gl1000 1975. Clutch is out. Had to order online. I removed clutch and found out the new one is not the right one. Was told that there are three motors for that year and they don't have the one for mine. Where can I find a clutch for mine? I don't have the # with me now will add later after work. But was like # 1006540 that's close. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I am not a first year production (1975) Goldwing model expert but that sounds untrue to me.
I believe there was only one GL 1000 engine from 1975-1979 that only had minor tweeks changed like different camshaft grinds, heads, and possibly gearing (unsure on this).
When I resurrected my 77 from a 12 year coma almost all the engine parts were the same for all years.

GL1000 75-79 all used the same clutch. Yes, there were slight revisions during that time, but any year clutch will fit any year.
What happened to your original clutch? Most unusual to have to replace the whole thing.

I thought there was two
EBC-CK 1221 was used up to E/N 2002383
EBC-CK 1143 was used from E/N 200284

they were the same diameter but had different tabs that fitted the clutch basket slots

Well, I see that on their site. Their pictures don't show the difference. I have not heard of this before. The dealers show the same friction plates for all. There was a revision on the later basket but that didn't affect the plates. I don't have a 78-79 clutch to check but if I remember right, the revision was on the the strengthing band around it.

Hi Old Fogey. I am not disputing any thing or any one. its just I came across the same problem. told there all the same so I ordered the plates they didn't fit the early engine and as I have 2 later gl1000 engines I checked the clutch baskets and plates there different the early one has a 16mm wide tab later has a 14mm wide tab

Thank you guys for the information. I did manage to get the right one! And from my research I found that there are two different ones you can get and the tabs seam to be what is different. BUT.. The one that was shipped to me was neither lol was the right box for the year but miss packaged. For myself not being a mechanic I was scared to do this. But I did it and I have more confidence in my abilities to work on a bike now. The reason the old clutch went out was it sat for about five years. I had no idea that things go bad just sitting but I have learned a lot. Again thank you all for your help!
